CHRIS B RUDE

A Visual Journey of Discovery of Identity

Chris B Rude is a native of Jackson, Mississippi. Throughout her childhood she lived in many southern cities, where she often times was the minority in her community. As a teen, she returned to Jackson, Mississippi where she later received her Bachelors degree from Jackson State University. Attending a HBCU allowed her to discover other aspects of Black culture and further dissect her personal identity. Her collective experiences along with her parents’ history in activism (The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s) were key in developing her artistic voice and informing her artistic decisions.

Her work focuses on social issues that impact the Black Community and reflect the influences of African diaspora on American culture. She creates pieces that explore the theme of identity and demonstrate the complexities of Black culture, defying the narrative of Black people as a monolith.
